I know that I am one with Spirit and that Spirit is always working through me.  This is a powerful understanding within myself.  When an accident has happened, and I require immediate first aid, it is vital to really know this truth.  And also to remember it.  Immediately after an injury a necessary part of the healing process is for me to remember that Spirit is working through me.  This lessens my pain and shortens the time to heal.

I believe It is possible to have such a strong belief that no other intervention would  be necessary.  But since all of us are not so in touch with Essence, we can be aided by supportive practice.  I will outline, step by step, how to incorporate Spirit into your First Aid practice “in a pinch” with yourself and others using EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).  This technique, for beginning and advanced EFT practitioners,  is miraculous in its effect.

Accidents can happen anytime.  They usually aren’t predictable.  We get stung by a bee or a hornet.  We trip and stub our toe.  We burn ourselves while cooking.  We fall off our bicycle and bruise or scrape ourselves.  We drive our car into a ditch or into another car.  We cut ourselves while preparing a meal or the cat or dog scratches or bites us.

Of course, if something is really serious, we need to get medical attention.  But there is something that can be done that may make it so you don’t have to go to the hospital for minor injuries.  Or you can make the major ones more manageable.  For me, in the heat of the present moment, I begin with remembering that I am connected to Spirit.  Even when an accident happens Spirit is still working through me.  The creative force continues to work through me even when I am hurt.  I rest assured that I can guide Essence to work through me to get well again in this present emergency.

If you have a Spiritual or religious belief that is different or uses different language, then use your own beliefs.  If you want to say a prayer to Jesus, then do that and combine it with the following techniques that have worked for me and many others.

Start with  the intent to use this practice when an accident happens.  Intent to use it under stressful situations beforehand is as important as remembering to choose to use this tool after an accident.  This intent and remembrance practice  gives you a tool with which to face the natural fear immediately following an accident.

Let’s say that you are cooking and you burn your hand – seriously.  First, I would run cold water on it – just as you normally would.  Now comes the part where you remember to tap into your Spiritual resources.  You anchor this by physically “tapping” on your body to get relief from the pain, anxiety and fear from burning yourself.

EFT is a form of “psychological acupressure.”  It is based on the same energy meridians that have been used in traditional acupuncture to treat physical and emotional ailments for over five thousand years, but without the invasive use of needles.  Instead, simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians on the head and chest while you express in some way your problem – whether it is a traumatic event, an addiction, pain, etc.- and then express positive affirmations.

If you’re an advanced user you would immediately tap on your “sweet spot.”  Your sweet spot is a tapping point that you resonate with.    When you’ve tapped in the past, it is a point that you may have enjoyed tapping more than the other points.

If you don’t know your sweet spot, start by tapping on the side of the hand, the karate chop point.  As you tap you can say something like, “even though I feel (angry, frustrated, frightened) about burning my hand while cooking, I deeply and completely love and accept myself.”

Pay attention to any names that you may have called yourself when the accident first happened.  Maybe you didn’t even say it out loud, but you whispered it under your breath.  Use that name that you called yourself.  I find it very helpful to use colorful (foul) language.  It is really helpful to let it rip.  Be loud!  Cuss!  Get in touch with what you’re feeling to help you release the pain and anxiety and start the healing process.

Many times we’re angry whenever we hurt ourselves.  Harness that energy and get it outside of your body.  You can play a pivotal role in getting that energy/anger out of your body.  Use the same phrase at least three times while tapping vigorously on your sweet spot or karate chop point on the side of your hand.  The repetition is necessary to fully move through your feelings and sensations.

Then tap on the points on your body.  (See the chart below).  Or you can use your sweet spot to tap on.

Energy Tapping pointsThere are two different verbal practices you can use here.   For one, you can use a reminder phrase as you tap on the points on your body.  If you can come up with one that is humorous, all the better.  For example, if you called yourself a name when the accident happened, use that name and give it a twist that makes you laugh.  Maybe you have a history of burning yourself and you called yourself a dummy.  Now, sprinkle in some cuss words.  Maybe something like, “god damn dummy!”  If you laugh a little when you say it – then bingo – you’ve got a winner.

Say the winner phrase loudly, as you tap about seven times on each point.  If something else pops into your mind, use that.  You are paying attention to your intuition.  While you tap, and things pop into your mind, it is no coincidence.  The tapping is bringing stuff up to consciousness to heal.

“Stream of Consciousness” is another verbal method that you can use while you tap on your body points.  Tap vigorously on your first point about seven taps (not so hard that you bruise yourself) and say something true for you like this: “I am so pissed off that I burnt myself again.”

Go on to the next point, tapping about seven times, and add a little more expression to your first phrase, “I can’t believe it! I burnt myself again.”

On the next point continue with your feelings like, “When I’m I going to learn to put the oven mitt on before I grab the skillet!”

Be loud, use humor, and cuss!  You want to get it all out!  When you get down to the last point on your body, check how you’re feeling.  Ask yourself these questions:

“Am I feeling any better yet?”

“Is my wound feeling any better?”

“Have I come back to center yet?”

If not, do another round of tapping while expressing your feelings.

I hope you are curious enough about these techniques to try them out for yourself.  Practice makes perfect.  As you practice on minor obstacles that come up in your life I believe you will gain courage for bringing in Essence to address major obstacles in your life.  I invite you to stay connected to this site for more insights into using EFT to bring more Spirit into your everyday life.
