The 2015 Vernal Equinox

The Aries Ingress chart (March 20, 2015 at 6:45 pm EDT) corresponds to the first day of Spring in the Northern Hemisphere and marks a time of new beginnings.  We can leave the barrenness of winter behind and see hope for a new life and a new start.  We can observe buds on the trees and the promise of fruit and flowers is all around us.  This year’s ingress especially harks a new beginning as it comes with a new moon, following closely behind a Solar Eclipse, 13 hours earlier.

Vernal Equinox 2015

The chart of the ingress shows the Sun midway between Mars in Aries and Neptune in Pisces.  In a mundane sense, we might see the world struggling to make sense of actions that are misguided or possibly downright deceitful.  A betrayal can cut to the core.  We might witness calamities involving water or oil.  But, on a more positive note, it is the perfect combination to take action on a spiritual level.  Visions can become realities.  People need to band together with right intentions, with love.  Where this can occur, much will be achieved.  Unfortunately, we humans don’t always operate with right intentions and we are left with disappointment and depression.

In addition to the Sun in Aries, the ingress chart also has the Moon, South Node, Uranus and Mars in Aries.  Also, the Moon can be found midway between the Sun at 0 Aries and Uranus at 15 Aries.  It may seem that many people are energized and/or upset by a sudden revelation or occurrence.  We may find that women, especially, feel the effects of this combination.  These planetary placements also suggest a time of new beginnings marked perhaps with a sudden break from the past or from complacency.  Those who feel powerless may be inspired to take action, even if it is just symbolic.  With Jupiter, making a trine to these Aries planets, most especially the Moon and Uranus, we can hope that actions taken now may meet with some success, especially if you don’t measure success in material terms but rather in spiritual ones.

Venus is happily in the sign of its rulership, Taurus, in the equinox chart.  Venus in Taurus suggests a degree of steadfastness and loyalty.  Relationships begun during this time will do well; established relationships persevere beyond difficulties.  The atmosphere is right for working out differences and recognizing what is of lasting value and importance.  This is not a superficial time or a time for quick solutions and easy gains.  This is especially true because Venus makes a quincunx aspect to Saturn meaning that hard work is involved and that there is some sort of necessary trade off to achieve a goal.

Finally, Mercury and Neptune are in the sign of dreamy Pisces.  Mercury is considered to be in detriment here, the sign opposite to Virgo, where it is the ruler.  Mercury is the planet that has to do with communication and the rational thought processes.  Pisces, on the other hand, is all about intuition and feeling.  Mercury is separating from a conjunction with Neptune, indicating that just before the ingress there may have been a deception or miscommunication or misguided action.  Without getting into politics, several situations come to mind.  In a spiritual sense, however, Mercury and Neptune are all about vision and faith.  This is not to say that we should fall into escapism, though that may also be a tendency with this aspect.  This aspect is here to remind us that all we have is now.  If we are worried about the future or thinking about the past, we are wasting a precious opportunity to appreciate the present.

No discussion of this ingress chart is complete without also talking about the Solar Eclipse in Pisces that precedes it by a matter of hours.  The periodicity and recurrence of eclipses is governed by the Saros Cycle, a period of approximately 6,585. 3 days (18 years 11 days 8 hours).  One of the methods I use to find out what kind of energy a particular eclipse may bring is to look at the aspects and midpoints in the first eclipse in the series.  You can find this information readily in Bernadette Brady’s book, Predictive Astrology.  The March 20 eclipse is from the family Saros Series 17 South; the first eclipse in that series occurred on May 27, 933 (OS).  In that chart, Jupiter occupies the midpoint of the New Moon and Uranus as well as the midpoint of Venus/Pluto.  In addition, the Node is on the midpoint of Mercury/Venus.  We can then surmise that this eclipse may bring a good chance of success in group projects, personal relationships and happiness in love and family matters.  Because it occurs in the last degree of Pisces, it signifies that matters must come to completion in order for something new to emerge.

Aries energy is about beginnings anyway.  We can take advantage of this auspicious Solar Eclipse/Aries Ingress to set our intentions.  What is your heart’s desire at this time?  What would you like to begin?  Perhaps, you yearn for a fresh start in a relationship, a new career or to begin a new phase of life, like parenthood or retirement.  What do you need to end in order to make your goals a reality?  This Spring is the time to move forward, leaving past disappointments and mistakes in our wake, recognizing that every day is a new day.
