5th Anniversary Astrology ~ The 2nd House

Time to move on to…
The 2nd house

2nd-house-2The 5th Anniversary 2nd House

Here we have a Sagittarius house, occupied by Venus and Pluto. In common astrological parlance, it is referred to as the house of possessions, one’s financial standing, one’s sense of self worth and the things that one values. In a strictly mundane account the second house is the field of money markets, banks, financial institutions, and the national wealth. But remember what I said when I began these notes…that I would be looking at this chart as that of a spiritual event. In those terms, none of the above quite qualifies. However, appropriate adaptations of them may certainly be applied.

For instance, in regard to the concepts of “possessions” and “things that one values,” there are clear spiritual correspondences. In this field of experience (i.e. house), what is it that we possess? Clearly, in a spiritual sense, it is nothing material. However, I do possess a sense of “Self.” I and I alone am me, myself and I. I “have” me, but what does that “me” have? The key idea that comes most readily to mind is that of my “soul.” It is my one true spiritual possession. As such, it is that personal asset which I value most. If it were not such a valuable commodity, what price wouldn’t the Devil pay for it? 😉

Isabel Hickey, one of my early astrological mentors, had an interesting phrase which she ascribed to the 2nd house: “that which the life is dedicated to redeem.” Is it not my main task in life from a spiritual perspective to redeem my soul? And since that it is the house of self worth, the question may be put, regarding this chart: What is the Concordance Anniversary worth to my soul?

Sagittarius

Sagittarius has several “key word” indications in a spiritual reading: generosity of spirit, an aspiration to spiritual truth, and inner vision. As the ruler of the natural 9th house, it brings to whichever house it is on the cusp of the characteristics of understanding, keen perception and a superconscious mind which, in its highest manifestation, turns to spiritual pursuits. Its symbol is the Archer with a pointed arrow in a drawn bow.

Venus

Venus in Sagittarius is well placed for our purposes here because this position has qualities that are very much like a combination of Venus and Jupiter (which rules this sign). These two planets are called “benefics” meaning that they have been shown, over thousands of years of observation, to have mostly beneficial influences in charts as Venus is the planet of personal magnetism and charm and Jupiter, that of expansion and good fortune. Then too, let’s not forget that trace of “God” that this Jupiter ruled sign brings to it. In Sagittarius, Venus attracts through its free wheeling and expansive nature but it also brings to this sign a softness which sweetens the innately sharp (note the sharpness of the archer’s pointed arrow) Sagittarian point of view. And let us not forget that Venus, the most feminine of the planets, is also commonly referred to as the planet of Love, a quality it brings to whichever house it occupies.

Another thing about Venus in the second house is that it is in one of the two houses that it naturally governs. Here she has some of the steadfast quality of Taurus, the natural ruler of the 2nd house. Comfortable in this house, she articulates a positive expression of the Divine Feminine, one of the features that was prominent in the original Harmonic Concordance chart. In short, this house position enhances the emotional and affectionate qualities of Venus, as well as her most pleasant disposition and friendliest, congenial demeanor.

Pluto

I have often referred to Pluto as analogous to the rear edge of the rudder of a ship. That smallest, most distant portion of the ship, just as Pluto is the smallest and most remote of our planets, tells us the direction in which the entire ship will travel. It is a powerful, transforming energy, whose positive or negative value depends on how it is situated in the chart. It is also referred to as the “higher octave” of Mars as they share the rulership of Scorpio. Pluto is often associated with hidden, subconscious drives, in much the same way that the rear edge of the rudder operates, unseen, from below the surface of the water. And it deals with the destruction of that which no longer serves us so that we may move forward in our evolutionary journey.

In the second house Pluto is well positioned to apply its transformative energy to the values and very “soul” of the Concordance Anniversary moment. Recall, if you will, that I said a few posts back that it is occupying the 29th and penultimate degree of Sagittarius perhaps the most potent degree in this sign of spiritual truth and inner vision.

The Venus/Pluto Mid-Point

Mid-points in astrology are sensitive degrees which are located halfway between two planets. They bring the power of the planets together, providing an astrological “hot spot” that combines the qualities of the planets that they divide. According to Rob Hand, they have a more concentrated focus than the individual planets that they join. The combined spiritual energies of Venus/Pluto say something like that it is a point of potent, transformative energy of steadfast, congenial and expansive love. In the Concordance Anniversary chart, this mid-point falls at 27° 04’ of Sagittarius

The Sabian symbols for this midpoint degree is: “An old bridge over a beautiful stream is still in constant use.” In his commentary on this symbol, Dane Rudhyar says, “…The mastery over material factors of a few imaginative and trained individuals enables their community to remain well-integrated and able to function easily in the best possible environment.” Linda Hill suggests that the symbol implies “…shortcuts across things that would otherwise divide and keep people and places apart.” Nice, for this day.

The Galactic Center

The Galactic Center is simply a point in spatial orientation for our Solar system, like the cosmic “straight in” around which our Milky Way Galaxy seems to revolve. It is a degree of originality, creativity, and unique self-expression, and an awakening of the seeds of something large. Some astrologers even consider it to be the second strongest point in any astrological chart, following the Sun, and mark it as a stunning source of energy, motivation, and aspiration. And our friend, astrologer Philip Sedgwick, the father of Galactic Astrology says: “The Galactic Center radiates brilliant insight to anyone connected with it [which]…carries the tone of consciousness evolution…” It currently occupies a point somewhere around 26° 57’ Sagittarius, a mere 7 minutes away from an exact conjunction with the Venus/Pluto midpoint and is, therefore, very active in this chart.

Surely this Sagittarius second house with well placed Venus, Pluto and Galactic Center as tenants provides an exciting set of circumstance for this Concordance Anniversary. Please consider marking it on your calendar as a day of remembrance.
